Addis Ababa, July 29 (WIC) – The Ethiopian Athletics Federation Tuesday revealed names of Ethiopian athletes selected for the 12th IAAF World Athletics Championship to be held in Berlin, Germany.
Briefing journalists yesterday, Federation Technique Department Head, Capitan Dube Jilo, said 37 athletes who fulfilled the required minima were selected for Berlin Olympic and they have already begun making trainings.
He said the athletes will compete in marathon, 10,000, 5,000, 3,500 and 1,500 meters in men and women divisions.
He said six men and five women were selected for marathon, while four athletes including Olympic Gold medalist, Kenenesa Bekele, were selected to 10,000 men race.
Five athletes were chosen in 10,000 women including Tirunesh Dibaba and Meseret Defar, he said.
Federation Honorary Treasurer and Ethiopia’s Athletics Team Leader, Amanuel Abrham, on his part said the federation has organized 20 successful international and local contests in the last budget year.
He said the contest held at the international and local levels enabled to produce new and stand-in athletes for the 9th African Youth Championship and 12th IAAF World Athletics Championship.
Dr. Woldemeskel Kostre, on his part said that Kenenesa Bekele, Tirunesh Dibaba, Meselech Melkamu and Mesert Defar will again compete in 5,000 meters races.
Three women and three men athletes will also compete in 3000 meters hurdle, said coach of the distance, Capitan Mohammed Yohannes.
Lieutenant Colonel Hussen Shebo, on his part said that Ethiopia will field three athletes in 1,500 meters race.
All pertinent bodies are working closely to score better results in the championship that will be taking place from August 15-23/2009 in Berlin, Germany, it was learnt.
