Diaspora Vows to Support Somali State Peace & Development

Chairman of Ethiopian Somali People’s Democratic Party (ESPDP), and state Diaspora communities in Minnesota, California and Washington ended Saturday with declaration pledging to build effective partnership dedicated to state peace and development.

The declaration pledged to the establishment of strong partnership between the government and the Diaspora in order to combat against violent groups and other destabilizing factors, building effective cooperation in overcoming backwardness and develop infrastructure sector in the state.

Somali state Diaspora communities of these states have, for the first time, come together in union to support a common goal relating to the wellbeing of their people back home and the core interests of the future of their state. Participants of these meetings thanked the government’s effort to bring its people together.

According to the declaration, because of the heightened instability in the neighboring Somali Republic, Somali State government and its people, both in the state and in the Diaspora, should have strengthen dialogue and permanent cooperation in protecting the peace in the state and in fighting all forms of violence.

The declaration stressed that the government’s commitment to talk to all opposition groups, who denounce violence and respect the Constitution of the country, is not only an important step in promoting peace and security in Ethiopia, but also will contribute greatly to regional and continental peace and security, since Ethiopia is geographically and demographically vital.

On economic front, the statement urged the government in creating conducive environment for private sector investment in order to improve the state’s economic competitiveness.

The state Diaspora communities in Minnesota, California and Washington are determined to fully participate in the private sector development and to play their role in mobilizing foreign businesses to invest the state, the declaration said.

The declaration concluded that Somali State Diaspora stands by the government in maintaining peace and promoting development. It highlighted the Diaspora’s willingness to partner with the government in building lasting cooperation and strengthen dialogue between the two in order to foster peace and development in Somali State.
