Japanese PM visit to Ethiopia successful: Ambassador Dina

January 2014 (WIC) –The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) said Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s visit to Ethiopia was successful. Abe visited Ethiopia on January 13 and 14/ 2014. In his two-day visit, the premier met and held fruitful talks with Ethiopian government and AU officials.

Briefing journalists on current issues here today, MoFA Spokesperson, Ambassador Dina Mufti, said PM Abe held a very productive talks with Ethiopian officials. During his talks with PM Hailemariam Dessalegn, PM Abe expressed his desire to support Ethiopia’s development efforts through Industrial Policy Dialogue, Ambassador Dina said.

PM Abe also pledged to fulfill all the commitments that his country made at the fifth Tokyo International Conference on International Development (TICAD), which took place last June. PM Abe also pledged to provide a total of more than 17 million US dollars to support refugees in Ethiopia, Ethiopian returnees from Saudi Arabia and South Sudan, he said.

Regarding the current situations in South Sudan, Ambassador Dina said negotiations are progressing in Addis Ababa and there is a hope to reach ceasefire between the two sides soon. Ethiopia through the Intergovernmental Authority of Development (IGAD) will continue to exert its utmost efforts to bring the conflict there shortly, he said.

Ethiopian diplomats complete diplomatic English training

Addis Ababa, 19 January 2014 (WIC) ¬- 65 Ethiopian diplomats successfully completed an ‘Intensive Diplomatic English’ course on Thursday. The month long course ended on January 16 was organized by the British Council Ethiopia in Addis Ababa.

The British Council along with representatives of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the United Nations Development Program presented certificates and merit awards to the graduates. The training aimed to enhance diplomatic English language skills to fast- track the country’s foreign relations activities and improve professionalism and effective communication. Speaking at the ceremony, State Minister Ambassador Berhane Gebre-Christos congratulated the trainees and commended their dedication and success in undertaking the training.

He noted that bilateral relations between Ethiopia and Britain has been growing in various sectors, particularly in investment and trade, and said the training would contribute to taking existing relations to a higher level.

He expressed the hope that this would include deepening and strengthening relations in capacity building and other areas. He thanked the British Council, the trainers and other stakeholders for their hard work and dedication.

UNDP Country Director, Dr. Samuel also congratulated the graduate and said that UNDP would expand its cooperation with Ethiopia in building the capacity of diplomats to help realize the development goals of the country in its external relations. The occasion was attended by officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the British Ambassador to Ethiopia, Ambassador Greg Dorey, officials of the British Council, representatives of the UNDP, trainers and trainees.

According to Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the training was given by the British Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the UNDP, and the Ethiopian Civil Service University.

Ethiopian Airports Enterprise plans new Airport for Awassa

Addis Ababa, 14 January 2014 (WIC) - The Ethiopian Airports Enterprise (EAE) announced that a location for the building of a new airport at Aawasa has been acquired and the design work is under In the last Ethiopian fiscal year alone, Awasa, which is the capital city of the Southern Region, is visited by more than 631,000 Ethiopians and foreign tourists that help for the gain of 130 million Br in revenue.

It is indicated that the way of transportation to the city being limited to the road transport only, greatly hinders the great many visitors that might want to have air transport to come to the city.

For the building of the airport, the Ethiopian Airports Enterprise has received a land and the design work is being done with the cost of one million Birr which is believed to be completed in four months time. (Fortune)
